I, The Juror

Today's mail brought a summons to jury duty.

My wife will be envious. She loves serving on juries. I, on the other hand, have a more nuanced view since, once upon a time, I set an informal record for being rejected for juries. The staff at the office where I worked in downtown Phoenix began calling me "Mr. Rejecto" whenever I'd wander back from yet another refusal.

In these more enlightened times, if I don't get accepted then I won't be called again for a year.

I understand that they've also upgraded the jury selection waiting rooms to avoid that Soviet medical facility look.

So my civic duty is on my schedule. It will be shortly after the start of the new year.

The excitement never ends. I'm already starting to feel noble.

I've never been able to serve on a jury. Somehow, shortly after I explain my field of expertise is rhetoric, subspecialty 'persuasion in scientific research', I always get dismissed from the room...

That's funny.

I know of a lawyer whose undergraduate degree was rhetoric. He wouldn't stand a chance!
