Ingredients of a "pretty productive" day

Jason Womack

What's the one thing - people ask me quite often - to improve the chances of today being a MORE productive day? All right. Here's one diagram that shows up quite often in my own note book. In fact, it first showed up while facilitating a leadership workshop for the US Navy on location at Seal Beach, CA. Take a look and see where you could experiment with a new idea this week.

Are you willing to think bigger?

Jason Womack

Knowing what you have to work on - the inventory of options - helps you work smarter, think bigger and make more good things happen. (That's a view from the lounge chair in my front yard, where I'm going to be sitting later this afternoon watching the sun go down.) For today - no matter what day you're reading this - how are you planning to work smarter?

Just 1 Little Secret You Can Use Today

Jason Womack

Start your day by thinking about the day. If possible, sit down at your desk or (even better, in a conference room or quiet office) and "imagine" it's 5:30 or so in the afternoon. What can you imagine will have happened over the next 8 (or 10, or 12!) hours? Some questions to ask: - Who did you talk do? - What did you work on? - What meetings did you attend?

Email management. a big deal? Maybe, maybe not

Jason Womack

If you navigate on over to Entrepreneur.com, and do a little searching, you'll find a bunch of articles on productivity, time-and-information management, and even email organization ideas! There were some great comments on this article, specifically around the great debate: A) inbox 0 B) just keep everything there, and search it when you need it Of course, I know enough to know that one can not "blanket-prescribe" a system; that is, what works for your boss may not, ultimately, work for you.

Is your mind already made up? For the "worst"?

Jason Womack

I'm planning a life-long, dream trip to visit Normandy, France. I will arrive in Paris on 4 June, and make my way toward the coast. Since teaching high school history (starting in 1995) I have wanted to be in this area of the world on an anniversary of D-Day, June 6th. And now, I'm going to take this trip. Thanks for the photo. . Over the past month, I've been scheduling tours, renting cars, and finding places to sleep.

Track it, change it

Jason Womack

Knowing what you're going to do with time (attend a meeting, travel by plane, work on a document, take a class) is very different than knowing what you did with time. Recently, I met with 12 managing directors of a global investment firm. In each conversation, we discussed this combination of planning and tracking. If you thought about it, or if we talked about it, how would you compare your own balancing act between what you say you'll do.and what you actually do?
