A word to pastors…during pastor appreciation month

I came into ministry later in life, after over 20 years in the business world. Maybe that explains some of why I was surprised, when I entered the ministry, at how hard churches can be on a pastor. I never knew. My church leadership blog has given me access into the lives of hundreds of young pastors, many of them in smaller churches where they are one of a few, if not the only, staff members.

Sometimes, as a leader, I need reminding…

I am a runner. I run as many as 6 days a week. When I run I am serious about it. I watch the time. I pace myself. I measure my distance. I check my calories burned. I do it for exercise. I run for personal well-being. It isn’t always easy. Sometimes I spend time thinking about the Gatorade waiting for me when I get home. I think about how much my legs hurt.

People follow people they trust. Do you want to be a trusted leader? Let people learn to trust you. I’ve found trust develops over time and experience, as we witness trustworthy behavior. Honestly, it’s a delicate balance, because while the leader needs to be strong, independent and confident, a trusted leader must be approachable, inclusive and humble.

It had been a stressful few days. Running is one of my best releases from tension. It had been raining for days. I’m a runner. I decided to get wet. I went for a run. A long run. If you’re a serious runner, sometimes you have to run in the rain. It was a good reminder. It is that way in leadership too. It’s that way in all of life.
