Back in 2009 when I was SVP of Operations with Bresnan Communications, I was in Butte, Montana for a morning staff meeting with the front office staff and field technicians. I watched as the local technical operations manager presented the weekly operating statistics on the overhead projector. This is the story of one of those days.

There, at an annual budget meeting with the entire operations management group in attendance, an important decision was made. This sets up a wall between management and the rank-and-file that is very, very hard to knock down. Leading vs. Managing - This is the big one- the ultimate battle. . “Will you follow me??”

He later started his own cable company, Bresnan Communications, in 1984, and continued to operate cable systems both internationally and domestically until his too-early passing in 2009. Because we knew if he cared that much to know our names, it would carry over into all aspects of his leadership, and how the company was managed.

Of the 8 core principles of More Human leadership , it’s #6 - Measuring, monitoring and managing with the right metrics - that presents the biggest “nuts and bolts” challenge to any leader. The dashboard would report these metrics by state management area (there were 3), and by the local management area (22).

A still from my May 2009 ‘state of the business’ video. The experience also was fitting given my state of mind at that time back in 2009. I had met Clark four years previously when he was a young IT operations manager and taken a chance on him, and it paid off. I’d been at my leadership role for 6 years.
