Diversity is a complex issue because it comes in all shapes and sizes. As an Executive Recruiter, I have been asked to identify candidates who are diverse in terms of race, ethnicity, gender and even geography. One type of diversity that has more recently begun to receive subtle yet perceptible attention is age diversity.

Let me be clear: leadership and diversity should have nothing to do with one another. This blog was recently nominated for Kevin Eikenberry’s Best Leadership Blogs of 2010 , and I noticed recently that Kevin was taking heat from the gender police for having only one woman on the list of nominees.

It has spread to pandemic proportions, crossing boarders and cultures, such that you’d be hard pressed to actually find someone under the age of 40 who hasn’t had substantial amounts of “diversity training&#. OXYMORON …Great leaders are not politically correct, but they are politically savvy – there is a difference.

You cannot separate leadership from decisioning, for like it or not, they are inexorably linked. I believe it was Cyrus the Great who said “diversity in counsel, unity in command” meaning that good leaders seek the counsel of others, but maintain command control over the final decision. They make bad decisions.

In the final analysis it’s really all a matter of perspective…you can either view yourself as part of a hierarchical world sitting at the top of the org chart puffing your chest and propping-up your ego, or you can view yourself as the hub at the center of a large and diverse network.
