A Coachable Mindset Begins With HUNGER

If you are reading this article, then either you or someone on your team needs to develop a more coachable mindset.

The issue, as many people have found, is that when you do not have a coachable mindset, you remain stuck and find excuses for the lack of results that stubbornness delivers.

And for people that work with un-coachable coworkers, there is a constant struggle that comes with enduring the behaviors of someone who refuses to change.

It is no fun working with someone who says to themselves or their team “that’s just how I am.”

So, for the sake of your team’s happiness – and to move beyond the frustrations that you may be experiencing as a symptom of being un-coachable, I am happy to share the a solution.

A more coachable mindset – the perspective or people who want to get better and are willing to change – always begins with a HUNGER.

In my book, STAYING COACHABLE, the story reveals four sets of questions that inspire relentless improvement and allow you to keep climbing.

And the FIRST part of that process – the first question – focuses on clarifying a hunger.

Fear and desire are the two most powerful motivators in our lives.

And if the fear of change has caused you to procrastinate or neglect the need to adapt to new circumstances, then developing the desire of something rewarding and meaningful may be what you need to be more intentional about.

Hunger is what drives us to action.

And while there are three very important questions that you will need to consider AFTER identifying What you specifically WANT, getting clear about that desire is vital to motivating yourself to action.

In the book, one of the characters shares a bit about the importance on HUNGER:

“Staying coachable starts with a HUNGER.

You have to want something enough to disrupt the inertia of the status quo.

Success is about selection and commitment.

And selection implies sacrifice… you can’t select everything.  But the more committed you are to the thing you choose, the more likely you will get it, and enjoy the journey.

Every great story begins with a desire for something…

HUNGER is about knowing what you want.  Focus is the key to achievement…

The act of choosing… clearly identifying and committing to what you want, also makes it less likely that you will allow your efforts to be sabotaged by something else that looks convenient.  If something is important, you don’t see its selection as a sacrifice…

Complacent people refuse to choose.

They suffer from the lethargy of comfort, so more committed teammates or more decisive opponents outperform them.

Complacency is really just an absence of passion… a lack of dedication to something you care deeply about. And it disappears when you choose an adventure.

You either identify a goal and pursue it with commitment and high standards of excellence, or you do nothing and your competition will do what you refused to…

All failure is a result of neglecting to choose and commit.”

Of course, the story includes far more than just this excerpt on the importance of HUNGER…

But if you are interested in being coachable… hunger is the first step.
