7 Unorthodox (But Very Effective) Roles For The Virtuoso Leader

Terry Starbucker

The other night I thoroughly enjoyed a holiday play at the Portland Repertory Theater, and marveled at the ability of the actors to take on multiple (and quite dissimilar) roles during the course of the production. There was a cool kind of virtuosity on display, and it made me think about how leaders sometimes need to do the same thing in the workplace; that is, assume different “roles” to keep the team on the path to success.

One way to think. bigger

Jason Womack

How quickly does a thought form? Take a look at this book cover, and run this thought experiment: "If I buy this book, what will I learn about?" I paused when I saw it. As I finished a week-long Executive Program at Singularity University this weekend, I'm hyper-aware of the concept of exponential growth. Of course, I was studying it in context of technological advancement.

How we connect with others today.

Coaching Tip

Online interaction has allowed us to meet many new people, but it has not diminished our yearning to maintain older relationships. It's hard to imagine a world without email. It's now the dominant form of exchange, with the typical American adult spending more than an hour a day managing the inbox. People under 25 now spend more time texting from their cellphones than talking on them.

Leadership Skills: Be Decisive; Find The Truth; Send A Thank You Note

Eric Jacobson

Be decisive A manager who can't make a decision or who can't make a timely decision will frustrate his/her employees. Equally bad, a lack of decision will impede the progress of the manager's team. Some managers make endless requests for data as a way to postpone their having to make a decision. Employees end up spinning in circles, slicing and dicing the information far beyond what is truly needed for the manager to make a decision.

Pain on Sale. Anyone?

Rajesh Setty

Pain is everywhere. If that depresses you, just know that joy is everywhere too. The problem? Our tolerance level for pain is reasonably low. And, our bar to recognize joy is way higher than it should be. It’s a double-loss really. We can see pain from a mile away but we can’t see joy even if it is right in front of us. I heard it from Tony Robbins once that we constantly move away from pain and move towards joy.

Mike Krzyzewski's Weakness Exposed - Stall Ball

Building Personal Strength

I almost never post about basketball. But I'm an over-the-top Duke fan, and I rearrange my calendar around Duke hoops. I monitor recruiting. I track what the players are doing in the summer. I read every article about Duke basketball on the Internet. I watch every single game on TV, if it is televised. Even with the windows closed, the neighbors can hear me shouting during games.
