So, is it about power?

I was on the “ Resignation of Eve ” teleconference call last night, and someone said something that didn’t come back to me until today. They mentioned the whole idea of church leadership being about power…and the absence thereof for women in particular. As I was driving today, that sentence suddenly hit me. What if we are trying to create communities of power instead of influence?

Do Leaders help us grow?

We need leaders because they provide structure and vision. How does one lead, provide structure and vision, and not exude power? I really don’t have the answer, but I am chewing on the question. I’d like your input. Here are some things that come to mind: 1. Humility – A leader who provides focus and structure without going on a power trip needs to be firmly aware that the people they are leading are smart – probably smarter and more capable than we are. 2.

Where does ministry happen? Does it happen during the maximum 10 hours a week that we spend in church? Does it happen once or twice a year when we do an outreach? I think ministry happens when we show up. It happens when we are present on the bus, when we are present at work… it also happens when we show up to bible study and Sunday morning worship.
