Leaders new to a team have the unenviable task of getting results, building trust and establishing credibility. All the while they are learning their new role, and possibly even a new company. For some leaders, doing one or the other is attainable, but doing all simultaneously can be a daunting task. It can be a delicate balance at times, and giving attention to everything at once can be a bit overwhelming.

We have so much stuff swimming around in our heads; half-baked ideas, things promised to others and that ever-growing list of to-dos that require attention and feel ever-present yet are ultimately unachievable. This is because getting that stuff out is becoming increasingly difficult in a world full of distractions. I don’t proclaim to be immune to this, but a technique I discovered a few months ago has enabled me to greatly reduce the number of tangled thoughts in my brain.

Leadership is putting a face to management science. A good leader is an able manager. And an able manager is someone who can recruit, hire, train, and mentor. He or she is someone who can motivate, engage, and monitor. And he or she has the ability to envision, plan, clarify, evaluate, and revise. Unfortunately, this is not what many leaders do. They are more focused on disciplining than directing, and more interested in rebuking than reinforcing.

He was arguably the greatest composer who has ever lived. He wrote over 600 scores during his short 35 year life span. He was performing advanced piano works before kings at the age of five. As a teenager, Wolfgang Mozart once heard a full opera performed in the Sistine Chapel; he then went home and copied it completely from memory, including the parts played by each instrument in the orchestra.

What is the point of good leadership? Shouldn’t all team members be considered and treated equal? Why do people need someone to look up to at all? These are questions raised by people who are skeptical about someone taking on the said role and not exhibiting any such quality or simply failing to live up to the title. Everyone knows what qualities a poor leader exhibits.

Not long ago I was reflecting on a conversation that I had with my spouse. I thought that I had not been a very good listener in a conversation that we had about an hour earlier. Knowing that she was in the next room, I called out to her, “Stephanie, I was thinking about that conversation we just had, and I was thinking I need to apologize for not listening or giving you my full attention when you were talking.
