Listening is an important behavior that many of us fail to do well enough. We fail to listen not because we don’t hear but rather because we don’t care to listen to what we are hearing. In short, we don’t like what we are hearing, so we tune out. Listening is an act of respect; it connotes that one individual cares enough about another to listen to what he or she has to say.

As you have likely heard, the pharmaceutical company Mylan and its CEO, Heather Bresch, have come under immense scrutiny for the firm’s EpiPen pricing policy. The EpiPen is a medication delivery device intended for use by those susceptible to anaphylactic allergic reactions (e.g., peanuts, shellfish, insect bites etc.). The use of EpiPens during an allergic episode can make the difference between life and death for those prone to severe allergic reactions.

That’s a “formula” that the late Garry Marshall, creator and producer of memorable sitcoms like “Happy Days,” “Laverne and Shirley” and “Mork and Mindy,” said he learned from observing comedian Lenny Bruce. Humor emerging from pain is man’s way of coping with something that hurt you. Some people would turn that pain into rage; others turn it into a catalyst for self-improvement.

For certain, people like Larry Page, Mark Zuckerberg, Jeff Weiner and Peter Thiel are all incredible entrepreneurs and have earned their place on anyone’s list of great innovators.

I recently spent a couple of days in New York. It was hot and humid, so I didn’t think twice being offered a ride in an open bicycle cart from Central Park to my hotel, which was approximately a 15 minute ride. I asked the driver to take the scenic road and enjoyed a last glance of the beautiful park, which added another 35 minutes to my New York experience. “It’s 35 dollars sir’ or at least that is what I have heard.

While there is a need for thinking literally when learning the basics of a discipline, once we have the rules down, we can (and should) innovate to our hearts content. Then, creativity is based on substance.
