Committees. Many of the suggestions I shared are suitable for young leaders in any field. Here are 5 words of encouragement: The more specific you are the more we can help. Established churches have systems. Too much you might say and that’s why you’re planting. But we have budgets that have likely been approved long in advance.

This church had a committee that could handle everything when I arrived. In some churches, if God were to call us to move in some new area, even if we were certain we had direction from God, it would take us months to get the idea beyond the committees of the church and to a church vote. This was a structured church. .

In my last church, some of our best leaders on our finance committee, for example, had never served in leadership in the church. These are sometimes “big asks”, but in my experience they won’t often get involved until they are asked. They were, however, tremendous leaders in their careers.

The staff talked about what would have to be done in order for this change to be successful. We discussed who needed to be talk with first. We shared names of influencers in this area of ministry.

It’s a collision of innovation and funding through a simple online process—no frills, zero red tape. In the end, a review committee will step in and help pick the top three ministries out of those ten who’ll receive grants. Bottom line: They’re giving away money to people who give away life. How cool is that?

I’ve learned committees don’t work as well here. Embrace change and encourage innovation – even when it’s uncomfortable. I learned our church had a history of innovation, overcoming, and bold moves of faith. We were looking to change the culture and the best way to do that is with the right people.
