When I was a graduate student at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign in the late ’80s, several of the program’s most esteemed faculty members left at the same time to work at other schools. This sudden exodus disrupted the tight-knit, collaborative community of scholars that had kept people in the department for so long. When a few faculty members departed, others began to think they’d be the only ones left. Suddenly everyone was looking for other opportunities.
