Common Problem

"When I say that Karen is the contact person and that all communication should go through Karen, I'd like to know what you think that means. Ted?"

"It means that all communication should go through Karen unless we just happen to be talking to one of their representatives. In that case, we can go ahead and argue our case."

"Maria?"

"It means that we should tell Karen about any of our conversations with the other firm."

"Sally?"

"It means that Karen should do most of the talking with the other firm."

"Hmm. Let's say, just for the sake of discussion, that I wanted Karen to be the only person who would be talking with the other firm about this project? How might I word that? Yes, Maria?"

"You might say that Karen is the contact person and that all communication should go through Karen."

"Thanks. That's very good."

Perfect. Now if only I could figure how to keep this lesson top-of-mind when I am trying to communicate with my team.
