While sitting with a man in assisted living I am reading from "Sixty-five Short Stories" by Maugham. Totally delightful old-fashioned writer. I was introduced years ago by a narrator (33rpm) reading Three Fat Woen of Antibe. I later enjoyed The Razor's Edge.

His short stories are a fountain of delights, each of which can stand alone, like an eclair that vanishes too fast. Populated by gentlemen sporting white ducks, ladies playing serious bridge, often interacting with brown or "half-caste" service people. (No longer PC, I'm afraid, with echoes of "thite man's burden" humming in the background.)

John,

I will try his short stories. I've really liked the short stories of Hemingway, Steinbeck, and Faulkner and expect that these will have the same punch.

Thanks!

Michael
