How’s The New Year Going?

It’s now a few days before February and I want to ask you how’s the new year going? Is it going the way you planned? Or are you struggling to make progress?

One thing I know for sure. You were so excited for January 1st. You had your list of New Year resolutions you were dying to jump into.

Maybe you considered:

  • Improving your communication with your spouse but the communication has broken down even more
  • Losing those holiday pounds but you stepped on the scale this morning and there were two extra pounds
  • Increasing the company’s bottom line but expenses have continued to rise

You started off with great goals. You expected to reach the goals you had set. But the buts began to set in.

The results were slow. They didn’t line up with what you expected. The inverse of your goals began to happen.

This new year began to suck right out of the gate…

Ugh!

Or, maybe just maybe, you’re the opposite. The lines of communication in your marriage have never been better. Those holiday pounds are gone. And the company’s bottom line? It’s awesome.

If you’re on the positive side of the new year, congratulations! You’re crushing life.

If you’re on the negative side of the new year and things aren’t going right, it’s okay. Your year can get better.

Get back on track

Maybe you fell away from your New Year resolutions. The goals didn’t start off well and you weren’t seeing the progress you desired. So you chose to give up.

Or maybe you failed to resist the temptations placed before you. You may have even snuck an extra bite of the Cheesecake Factory’s Godiva Chocolate cheesecake. Yeah, that delicious delicacy…

But just because you’ve slipped doesn’t mean you have to stay off-track. You can get back on track and knock your New Year resolutions out of the park.

Look at the track. Figure out how to get back on the path to success.

Gain accountability

We slip from our goals because we keep them to ourselves. We have no one to keep us accountable for the commitments we’ve made.

Break this grievous misstep today.

Commit to finding a buddy to keep you accountable for your commitments. Invite them into your life and ask them to gently nudge you when you’re going in the wrong direction.

When you gain accountability, you have something to push towards. You also have someone to help you up when you slip.

Consider changing your goals

Yeah, you’ve slid from those glorious New Year resolutions. You’re not where you were expecting to be by the start of the second month of the year.

Yet you’re still here. You’re still breathing.

This means you still have choices.

One of those choices may be to consider changing the goals you set out for yourself at the beginning of the new year. Did you know you can do that? You can. And it can be just the thing you need.

Reevaluate your New Year resolutions. Are they still aligned with who you are and where you want to go? If so, keep them. If not, you can change course. You can change your goals.

Go ahead. Change your goals. Make them realign with what you want to do with your life. It’s okay.
