Agreed Ron! “Being liked” should never be a criterion for making a decision by the leader. When the leader fails to make the hard call, his subordinates may try to manipulate him and to influence the leader's decisions in their favor. Hence, in order to make better decisions – one must be fair and consistent. In fact, the leader's decisions must be unbiased by popularity concerns. They must be balanced.
It is good to use heart as much as head by the leader. He can ask himself: “What is the right thing to do here?”
I feel at the end of the day the leader's job must be 'respected' rather than 'liked'.

Good word here Ron. Reminds me of a VERY expensive lesson I learned several years ago as a new, young leader: I wanted to be liked more than I wanted to lead. That desire for approval seriously damaged my ability to lead well.
