5 Ways to Strengthen Trust With Weak Ties

Let's Grow Leaders

'I would describe our meeting as a roll of the dice. Perhaps someday we will upgrade our relationship to “weak ties,” but yesterday we were just 2/850 at the Great Ideas Conference chatting through our freebie Hyatt sunglasses over lunchtime brisket and gluten-free potato salad. “Joe,” the CEO (named substituted for anonymity and rhyme), seemed genuinely intrigued by our LGL mission.

From Technical Expert to Successful Leader

General Leadership

'This is a story about the transition from Technical Expert to Successful Leader. Following a one-year tour in Afghanistan, I was reassigned to an Air Traffic Control (ATC) radar facility. Not just any ATC facility, but one of the larger and busier ones—the 2nd busiest joint-use airfield in the Air Force. The 15-position facility is manned by two 40-person teams, responsible for the safe and expeditious movement of 180,000 annual aircraft operations across 4,600 square miles and six airports.

Leadership And The Incredible Power Of Love

Terry Starbucker

'Love isn’t a new concept when it comes to great leadership- after all, in one of the oldest leadership books out there, The Art of War (it goes back to the 6th Century BC), Sun Tzu said “He treats them as his own beloved sons and they will stand by him until death”. However, it is not a concept well suited to the typically rough and tumble world of business.

Life, Love, & Leadership Lessons In Unlikely Places

Lead Change Blog

'Kind of funny, isn’t it, how you can find lessons about life, love, and leadership almost everywhere, provided there’s openness to seeing them. I didn’t expect that thought to bubble up in a spin class while pedaling furiously, breathing wildly, and trying frantically to ignore an uncomfortable bike saddle. Part of my second chance at a meaningful second act of life includes paying more attention, working to be my best self, and encouraging others to do the same.

The Real Definition of Employee Engagement

Let's Grow Leaders

'Ever since Gallup revealed their findings that 70% of workers are either disengaged or actively disengaged in their work, “employee engagement” has been all the buzz. Quite frankly, none of this is new, and anyone reading this blog knows that and is working hard to change the game. Tonight, I started to write a different post (which I’ll save for Monday), but got sidetracked when for grins, I looked up Employee Engagement in the Urban Dictionary, searching for a pithy opener.

Work with Who Your People Are, Not Who You’d Like Them to Be

Great Leadership By Dan

'Guest post from Dan Gregory and Kieran Flanagan : Traditional models of leadership have a rather judgmental flavor to them – they tend to favor the triangular shape and place those of us who are leaders at the top, with increasing numbers of obedient minions beneath us as we track down through the layers of the hierarchy to the poor wretches who support us at the bottom.

No Ego: How Leaders Can Cut the Cost of Drama, End Entitlement and Drive Big Results

Speaker: Cy Wakeman, M.S., CSP, President, Reality-Based Leadership

Most HR leadership philosophies are grounded in two completely faulty assumptions — “change is hard” and “engagement drives results.” Those beliefs have inspired expensive attempts to keep change from being disruptive to employees.
