What Team Motivation Looks Like

Motivating Your Team

You’re getting ready to bring in a motivational speaker. Someone who will really get the troops riled up. You know this is just the thing your team needs to get motivated.

Then, once the motivational speaker has left, your team’s enthusiasm and motivation return to the levels they were before the pep rally. Maybe their motivation level drops to pre-rally levels. This happens.

The Wrong View Of Motivation

We often think of motivation as a kick in the pants. Something to get us going. But then we find out motivation doesn’t last. Because of this, we believe motivation doesn’t work.

The late, great Zig Ziglar had a great quote about motivation:

People often say that motivation doesn’t last. Well, neither does bathing – that’s why we recommend it daily.

Is your view of motivation that a single dose will last forever? Do you believe you only have to bring in a great speaker and your team will be motivated until the end of time?

If you do, you have the wrong view of motivation.

What Team Motivation Looks Like

You can’t expect a one-hit motivational event will keep your team motivated. Team motivation doesn’t look that way.

Motivating your team is an on-going process. One you will have to constantly work on. One you may even grow weary of doing. But you must if you want to have a motivated team.

Team motivation looks like:

  • Encouraging words when work is done well.
  • A helping hand when times are tough.
  • Bringing in people to speak into your team member’s lives.
  • Monetary rewards for doing good.
  • Finding ways to help your team grow in positive ways.
  • Taking 5 minutes to let people know you care.

Motivation isn’t a one time deal. Motivation is something you will have to constantly work on giving to your team.

Remember, Zig Ziglar said: People often say that motivation doesn’t last. Well, neither does bathing – that’s why we recommend it daily.

The same is true as you lead your teams. You have to constantly find ways to encourage and motivate those you’re leading. Each time you give them a motivation booster shot, you will help create a motivated team.

You can do this!
