To be honest, I wasn’t surprised to hear of the passing of Ravi Zacharias. Ravi had been diagnosed with cancer and his prognosis wasn’t good. Yesterday, May 15th, 2020, Ravi Zacharias passed away.
It’s a blow to those in the Christian faith. Ravi was an Indian-born, Canadian-American Christian apologist. He helped many Christians understand their faith better.
I had the opportunity to see him last year at the Catalyst Conference in Atlanta. You can read my notes from Ravi Zacharias here.
Yet, his works will live on for generations. They will continue to touch Christians and non-Christians around the world.
Today, I wanted to reflect on the life of Ravi Zacharias and share some of his insights with you. They will help you become a better leader. More important, they will help you become a better person.

We have a right to believe whatever we want, but not everything we believe is right:
That’s right… You can believe whatever you want. This doesn’t mean what you believe is right.
Make sure what you’re believing or listening to is true.
What you applaud you encourage, but beware what you celebrate…
Do you want to see your team, your family, your friends do what is right, applaud the behavior you want to see. You will begin to see a change in their actions. They will begin doing more of what you celebrate.
However, there’s a flip side… We have to be careful of what we applaud.
If we applaud what is wrong, what is unruly, what is untrue, we are going to get more of this. Make sure what you’re applauding is what you want.
Truth that is not undergirded by love makes the truth obnoxious and the possessor of it repulsive.
We may know the truth. We may even live the truth. Yet, if we are not living the truth in love, it is obnoxious and repulsive.
We wonder why so many people are turned away from the truth of Christ. It’s because of this quote.
People are sharing truth but they’re not sharing it in love. Love makes even the hardest truths easier to swallow.
Love is hard work. It is the hardest work I know of, work from which you are never entitled to take a vacation.
Ravi is right. Love is hard work. Whether it’s our love for our spouse, our love for our family, or the love we have for those we lead… Love is hard.
We cannot get lax in loving others. We have to constantly work at loving and showing our care.
Be a lover of people. Help them to see how much you love them.
One often sees a call only in retrospect. This too is God’s design. God often reinforces our faith after we trust him, not before.
Who doesn’t want to know their calling? We all want to know what we were placed here to do.
There’s truth in Ravi’s quote above. We rarely see our calling before we’ve learned to trust and rest in Him.
We have to place our trust in our King. We have to make sure we know what we believe.
Then our calling is opened up to us.
Only through repentance and faith in Christ can anyone be saved. No religious activity will be sufficient, only true faith in Jesus Christ alone.
In the Christian world, we see leaders who strive to do more and more work. They believe if they help one more person come to Christ or if they share one more message, that will be enough.
Or the average Christian… Their walk consists of volunteering more and more. Or they believe they have to share the latest Christian meme on Facebook.
All of these are works. Works are good but they won’t save you.
To be saved, you must repent and have faith in Christ. This is the path to being saved.
We talk so much about one’s rights… so little about what is actually right.
In today’s hot political climate, this verse rings true more than ever.
Michigan has been a hot spot for political discord. We are demanding our individual rights without thinking about what is actually right.
I see the shelter-in-place, lock-down, whatever orders as something that can test Christians and their love for their brothers and sisters.
We have a choice. We can talk and demand our rights. Or we can show love and do what is right.
The choice is up to each of us. I want to encourage you to do what is right.
Beginning well is a momentary thing; finishing well is a lifelong thing.
It is easy to start well. We can all look good at the beginning. Think about…
When you start a new position, you may go out and buy a new suit. Or you get a haircut. Or you hold yourself up better.
As the days go by, we can relax the standards we set at the beginning. They begin to diminish.
Finishing well, on the other hand, takes a lifelong commitment. We make choices day-in and day-out on finishing well.
Choose to live a life where you will finish well.
