How to Handle Change

As market conditions, budgets and consumer needs change, companies will have to adjust to remain successful. However, change is one five letter word that often strikes fear into teams and employees. According to a study conducted by IBM, the need for company leaders to lead change is growing, but the necessary leadership skills are diminishing. Every organization faces challenges whenever something significant changes, however, those who can master the ability to adapt to change will be at a definite advantage.  Use the following three tips and strategies to effectively handle change in the workplace.

Have the right attitude

It’s important to first recognize that change is a natural part of any organization. From changing policies, to changes in client rosters - these things are normal. Instead of allowing change to throw you off track, think of it as a challenge that can help your organization succeed if conquered. Dale Carnegie once said, “Act enthusiastic, and you will be enthusiastic.” Instead of focusing on the negatives of having to adjust to change and allowing it to overwhelm you,  accept that change is happening and take positive action. Challenge yourself to find new ways to adjust every day.

Be patient

The old saying that patience is key is truly applicable when it comes to handling change. While it may be tempting to try to hurry through the change process in an attempt to get it over with as quickly as possible, doing so may only cause more frustration because many change processes truly take time. To ensure an effective cycle of change, there must be adequate communication and integration. Practice patience to allow time for successful planning, preparation, and the necessary adjustment of every organizational function, to create a smooth transition for everyone involved.

Communicate

Keeping the lines of communication in the workplace open should be an ongoing process for every organization; however, communication is even more important when handling change.  To successfully engage in organizational change, everyone involved needs to be aware of the details of the change so that they can determine how it will affect them.  Communication also allows every member of the team to gain insight which can also help everyone better adjust to the change. Leaders must make team members aware that their input and feedback is valuable. Engage others in the process to create an avenue of support that will help minimize the fear of change, and empower everyone in the organization.
