I had envisioned a future in which I would achieve a goal, perhaps be hailed as the conquering hero. For example, that speech I bombed: by the time I finished, it looked as if I'd just run 3 miles, I was perspiring so much. For example, did I learn to never speak in public again? Apart from feeling mortified, I was heartbroken.
