Father's Day Approaches

As Father's Day nears, some quick book recommendations:

• "The Edge of Sadness" by Edwin O'Connor. The protagonist is a Catholic priest. This is a difficult novel to describe. Although it has a lot of humor, its title is perfect.
• "Flashman" by George MacDonald Fraser. A Victorian tale of a complete rogue. Very funny.
• "Tom Jones" by Henry Fielding. And while on the subject of rogues, this may be the gold standard.
• "Master and Commander" by Patrick O'Brian. The first in the Aubrey-Maturin series set during the Napoleonic wars. There is a reason why O'Brian was invited to a lunch with the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
• "On the Border with Crook" by John G. Bourke. Beautifully written by a man who was there when General Crook pursued Geronimo.
• "Lonesome Dove" by Larry McMurtry. In case your father is one of the few men who hasn't read this classic of the Old West.
