Want to know what they want? You could examine precedents, order a few studies, consider various options, weigh the pros and cons, bring in some experts, and even dabble in game theory.

Or you could ask them.

Oh sure, Henry Ford said that if he'd asked his customers what they wanted, they'd have said a faster horse, but he was talking about a macro-exception.

Direct often does the trick. Don't get too clever.
