There are two stories you can tell about finance in America. In the first, the financial sector helps grow the economic pie by shifting resources to the people and firms who can put them to the best use. In the second, Wall Street is capturing value rather than creating it; as economist Tyler Cowen once put it: “It’s as if the major banks have tapped a hole in the social till and they are drinking from it with a straw.”
