In every instance, however, I observed several managers in their organizations who were masters at kissing up and kicking down. In effect, these organizations experienced a leadership gap.

I highly recommend reading Stanford Professor Jeffrey Pfeffer’s recent books, Leadership B.S. In them he makes a compelling case that most leadership training has failed to produce effective leaders and that the poor state of the vast majority of workplace cultures today is harming the health of people.
