This past Saturday, I had the privilege of sharing an auditorium with dozens of motivated young college men from the HBCU North Carolina Central University and other institutions. I know they were motivated because they showed up at 8:30 am on a Saturday morning for the Durham Success Summit’s (DSS) annual flagship event.

It motivated them to do more. Second , he systematically looked for a few opportunities each week to send an email to key company influencers that highlighted the results his teammates were getting. That served multiple purposes. It made his teammates feel good. And, it built broader support and appreciation for what his team was doing.

His job is to make sure they’ve got the information, perspective, skill sets and motivation to do that. He’s also learning that his job isn’t to come up with or prescribe solutions for how to get to the outcome. That’s his team’s job. I love that distinction between solutions and outcomes.

It’s almost always a waste of time to try to figure out what motivates them or how you can help them see the light. Attacking and complaining, for trolls, are not means to an end; they’re ends in themselves. In other words, trolls are gonna troll. Your energy is better spent on neutralizing their impact.
