On my last trip to Oregon, I watched service station attendants quickly intercepting out-of-state travelers who had, without any guidance whatsoever, boldly started to pump gas into their own cars.
The attendants intervened so smoothly and diplomatically it is possible that they had completed an extensive training program.
I'm not sure about the elevator operator situation in Oregon.
