Rule eight is: Stressed brains don’t learn the same way. People under stress do not learn information, develop new skills, create ideas, or find solutions to problems as well as people who are not under stress. No wonder I’m stressed!”. They feel stress, frustration, or irritation in one area of their life or in one relationship, and they vent it in a different area of their life or in a different relationship. I didn’t do any of the things that stressed him. I could see that he was hot, scared, and stressed. And, people often respond the same way.

When I first walked through this area on my way to get a cup of coffee and some breakfast, I felt a bit stressed. As I re-framed my view of the mess in terms of the lives, relationships, and experiences that it represented, it transformed from stressful to soothing. The mess felt a bit overwhelming and out of control.

What is hard is remembering to do it when you are stressed, tired, rushed, or frustrated. Customers getting impatient with store employees. Store employees failing to listen to customers. And the list goes on. It’s really not so hard to be kind. Today, my encouragement for you is to be kind. Let someone go first at an intersection.
