Beverages and food are probably a lot more distracting than phones. I almost wrecked my truck once trying to open a really stuck bag of M&Ms while driving. (Which is why I always have a little pair of child's scissors on hand -- along with dental floss and nail clippers for traffic jams and stoplights.) (I think we spend a lot of time creeping along and stopping. Perfect time for chatting.)

One reason for McDonald's success is that most of their products don't drip on your shirt and are easy enough to eat with one hand while driving with the other.
