Malcolm Gladwell’s Outliers (from 2008) is Back on Top — Here is the September, 2015 New York Times Business Books Best Sellers list

Here is the September, 2015 New York Times Business Books Best Sellers list.

Outliers is back on top on this month's best sellers list
Outliers is back on top on this month’s best sellers list

An observation. First, and foremost, the number one best seller on this month’s list is Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell. Ths book was published in November, 2008 – nearly seven full years ago, and I presented my synopsis of this book in January, 2009 at our monthly event, the First Friday Book Synopsis. Also on this month’s list is Thinking, Fast and Slow; The Power of Habit; Freakonomics… None of these are “new.” So, I guess they fall into the category of “perennial” best sellers. I think only Elon Musk, Team of Teams, and Get What’s Yours from this list are recent publications (published this year).

What to make of this? I’m not sure. My memory could be playing tricks on me, but it seems that this month’s list is heavier with “long-timer” best sellers than it used to be. (And, by the way, I think these are deserving of such longevity. They are important books).

I tell people that Karl Krayer and I have not missed any of the really big best sellers at our First Friday Book Synopsis. We present two book synopses every month, and have done so every month for 17 ½ years (since April, 1998). There are times when we feel like we have to choose between best-selling, important, new books. But, we haven’t missed many of the ones that seem to have shown some test of time. For example: from this month’s list, I have presented synopses of #s 1, 4, 5, 7, 8, & 9, and my colleague has presented # 3. The three we have not presented do not quite fit the type of book we commonly look for for our event. (For example, we don’t do many books on “finance” or “money” issues).

We record (audio) our presentations, and make the audio recordings, along with our comprehensive handouts, available at our companion site, 15minutebusinessbooks.com. Yes, my synopses of Outliers, Elon Musk, Team of Teams, and the others we have presented from this month’s list, are all available. Check our site out.
