HBR’s first retrospective was written in October 1942, on the occasion of its 20th anniversary. In it, HBR’s second editor, George Bates, took stock of the landscape the Review had confronted since its founding. In perhaps the longest sentence ever published in this or any other publication, he described a world both uniquely historical and eerily eternal:
