Product-market fit is the biggest reason why a lot of companies happen to fail. It doesn’t even matter how good your sales team is either because you will not be able to attract the right customers to make your business sustainable.

Your Product and Channel Don’t Fit

Product and channel fit is yet another critical component that you have to look for when building a sustainable business. Channel refers to the marketing channels that you will employ to promote your product. It’s important to know that your company will be a very good fit for some channels, but it will be a bad fit for others. Pinterest and even Quora grew their service by simply using organic search. Your business may not work this way, it may be that you need to harness social media ads, for example.

Poorly Trained Staff

Companies that rely on their sales team to get new customers have to put in the work to make sure that their team are the best-trained and most compassionate part of their organization. After all, your sales team will represent your company every day. That being said, if they do not understand the market or even your chosen industry, then you may find it difficult to get the customers you are looking for. If you want to do something about this, then you have to work out where your team benchmarks when compared to others in the industry. Are they performing at the right benchmark? If not, then this could be the weak link within your organization. You also need to train your staff so they understand your customers. Every person that works within your company has to know who your ideal customer is. Members of your team have to know the demographic and even the psychographic makeup of who you serve. They should also understand how to find them and how to speak the same language as them so that everyone can be as engaged as possible. If there is a bit of a misalignment issue in the organization about the ICP or anything else of the sort, then this will work against you.
