What Self-Esteem Does for Your Career & Your Life!

Self-esteem — confidence in your own worth — feels good. Yet it does more than just feel good. It rockets your career — any career you choose — with specific assets.

    Benefits to Your career

  1. Gives you a thick skin and an open mind when hearing criticism without making you an arrogant oaf.

  2. “No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.” ~ Eleanor Roosevelt

  3. Clears up confusion. It answers questions like: Can I find success here? Or are the conditions impossible? When you know who you are and value yourself, the path is clearer.

  4. Shines through to others. People like to hire and work with others who value themselves. You make working with you easy. That’s attractive!

  5. Buoys you through tough times. We all have insecurities and doubts. However, good self-esteem is a buoy in many storms.

  6. Helps you see possibilities that you wouldn’t otherwise see or consider. This is career rocket fuel!

  7. And if you want to be a leader, it …

  8. Gives you potential to be a great leader. Great leaders have high self-esteem. It allows them to listen, empathize, mentor, and publicly recognize talents of those they lead. They don’t fear their employees’ success. In fact, they help make it happen.

  9. Self-Esteem for Handling Major Changes

  10. Picture leaders saying, let’s bring that person on our new team because they handle change well. Adaptability makes you a very attractive employee. Self-esteem can make you more adaptable. When you believe in your value, you don’t think it’s only good in the current team.

Real-life Example: A large corporation decided to consolidate its three tech support centers into one. It made sense since each of the three companies were moving to one corporate software platform. Moreover, it would save money and give tech support center staff more opportunities for learning and development. Yet, the smallest company’s tech support staff took it as an insult. They kept saying “but we treated our customers well.” It was clear that the small group had tied their value to only their current work setting. Imagine how leadership would have viewed them if they had welcomed this new opportunity.
