Take stock of your skills. 

That is easier said than done.  You may not perceive what exactly counts as a “skill”.  Some of your skills may actually be personal gifts.  You may be very good at something and not consider that skill/gift as an asset. 

We tend to believe that only skills/gifts that we can have are quantifiable.  Take physical attributes and sports for instance.  It’s really easy to see the difference between a 5’8” basketball player and a 6’4”.  That’s easy.  Most of us would assume that the taller player has a gift.  The gift of height.  Similar with  a baseball pitcher and the ability to throw a baseball accurately and faster than another person. 

You just made my day.

The same can be said for a singer or artist.   The ability to create something beautiful can be seen and heard by many and assumed to be a gift/skill because others cannot replicate them. 

These gifts and skill are very easy to see, touch and witness.  They are easily recordable and recognized as valuable because only a small section of the population possess the ability to magically sing, create valuable pieces or art of play professional sports. 

What about your gifts?  Those gifts that you use everyday to your advantage that help you be great at your work or life?  Here are some gifts that you may have;

Ability to mediate issues

Make sound decisions

Put people at ease

Understand complex issues quickly

Offer sound advice to co-workers and superiors

Make someone smile

Organize complex tasks easily

Be honest, always

Reliability

Understand and use technology

These are just a few gifts that I’ve witnessed in people I’ve had the pleasure of spending my day with.  Don’t sell yourself short, you have gifts.  Recognize those gifts and use them to your advantage.  While you may not be able to throw a fastball 100 mph or make someone weep with joy after hearing your rendition of La Boheme – Puccini – ‘Si mi chiamano Mimi’, don’t underestimate your ability to make the world around you better by using your own personal gifts.
