For many of the people in the class, this was their first in-depth exposure to the DISC model and how to use it to more effectively communicate with others. Using it to define, label, or box-in another person violates one of the first things I learned in my college statistics class: Never use a population statistic to describe an individual observation. We discussed the webinar, and, as we spoke, I remembered an event from a training class I lead on this topic one time. During the training class, I made the point that only positive reinforcements encourage people to give high-level, maximum effort. I had the class rank their top concerns with regard to interactions with their leaders. Recently, I had the opportunity to work with one of my long-time clients, the Montgomery County (Indiana) Leadership Academy. In the process, I was reminded of some insights on ths vital point by an exercise we did in a session on Servant Leadership.

On Shadow Day, parents attend classes with their children. As I sat in her American Literature class listening to a discussion of Nathaniel Hawthorne’s classic The Scarlet Letter , her teacher questioned the virtue of tolerance. In his brief comment on the topic, he referenced a talk he once heard by Elie Wiesel.
