For The Modern Worker, Wellbeing Is More Important Than Growth

The last few years have seen a groundswell of acceptance that modern workers want more from work than simply a pay check.  If further evidence were required, a new report from Deloitte provides it.  It reveals that the majority of American workers today prioritize flexible work and wellbeing over pay.

The survey, of 1,000 white-collar professionals, showed that nearly all felt they would benefit from greater flexibility in their job, with things such as better mental health and an improved work/life balance the key advantages.

Some 82% of those whose employer offers flexible working have taken up the offer, whether that’s enjoying flexible work hours or working remotely.

“In today’s fast-paced and always on world, people are taking more control of their own well-being,” Deloitte say. “Our survey suggests that more people are using flexible workplace programs, even though they have lingering concerns about the potential consequences to their professional development.”

Career progression

It’s perhaps illustrative, however, that around 80% of respondents thought that a flexible work style would hinder their career progression.  Most respondents thought more traditional hours in the office environment is the ideal for career growth, but this doesn’t appear to be holding people back from wanting more flexible working.

Indeed, most respondents urge their CEOs to set a better example and create a culture of wellbeing in their organizations, with policies such as flexible working at the core.

“Each individual has their own unique needs in the workplace,” Deloitte say. “Leaders can drive well-being within their organization by taking an inclusive approach to work flexibility and offering options that meet a variety of diverse needs. Through adaptable programs and supportive leadership, professionals will feel empowered to use flexible work options without fear of consequence.”
