Your blog says “Our leaders need to be better than they were in the case of Shirley Sherrod.” While I don’t disagree with you at all; don’t you think that Fox News and Glenn Beck and the like also need to be significantly better than they were in the case of Shirley Sherrod? After all, they were the ones who exaggerated, mislead, and reported inaccurate information about her that damaged her career for their own personal gain. Why didn’t you mention their failure? Why don’t you hold them accountable too?

Thanks for the comment William. My primary point was to call out the failure of leadership and basic management skills that was shown in the way Mrs. Sherrod was treated and to make the point that we should always try to get the facts before making big decisions. You raise a good point about the media's role though. Very few covered themselves in glory on this. Howard Kurtz offers a good recap in today's WaPo. Agree about the leadership and management failure here AND agree that the incident points to a larger problem in today's culture of people posting, commenting, retweeting, etc, without always doing the thoughtful data gathering, analysis, and critical thinking that helps paint a more complete picture. Many many people would benefit from slowing down, taking a deep breath, and just THINKING for a bit. We control information - we need to stop letting it control us.

So true Jenny. Reminds me of Tim Gallweys STOP acronym. Step back, think, organize your thoughts, proceed.

Scott,

Reminds me of the old Ready, Fire, Aim approach that is all to common in lots of companies and/or individuals.

Totally, Dave. I think they'll be teaching this as a "what not to do" in HR training for years to come.
