Scott-
As I currently find myself betwixt and between, I really appreciate your tips. Last week, in particular, I was feeling rather unproductive as those around me were working to meet a deadline. And yet, when I read your tips, I realized that I was playing the roles you describe. My experience is that the "rhythms" of these roles feel very different than being on the front line of getting the work done.

My input regarding these roles is that in order to avoid the "So what does she really do now that she has gotten that promotion?" question, it is important for those around you to understand the roles and to appreciate them. Doing them well certainly goes along way toward appreciation, in addition, I think it is important to speak openly to the staff about these roles in order to both reinforce value of the roles and to create transparency.

You raise some great points Gayle. I've found the one about others asking the question, "What does she really do now that she's been promoted?" to be one that can really get inside one's head and knock you off your game. In my experience that question is much louder in the head of the promoted leader than it is with the team members.
