Good for A&E – Intolerance Really is Intolerable (Reflecting on the Suspension of the Duck Dynasty Star)

I’ve watched just a few minutes of one Duck Dynasty (to see what the buzz was all about), but I am aware of the popularity of the Duck Dynasty folks.

Phil Robertson, one of the stars, and co-author of a best selling book, recently spoke his mind regarding gay people in an interview.  He has every right to believe and speak as he wishes, just as I have every right to be appalled and disgusted by his comments.  I will not quote his comments here.

But, good for his television network, A&E.  They responded quickly.  Here is their statement about suspending him indefinitely (from an article on CNN):

“We are extremely disappointed to have read Phil Robertson’s comments in GQ, which are based on his own personal beliefs and are not reflected in the series Duck Dynasty,” the network said in a statement Wednesday.
“His personal views in no way reflect those of A&E Networks, who have always been strong supporters and champions of the LGBT community. The network has placed Phil under hiatus from filming indefinitely.”

This is what I think.  The workplace is increasingly diverse .  At the heart of working together is a need for some level of personal acceptance and respect.

Intolerance in the workplace leads to conflict, low morale, lower productivity.  In other words, intolerance is bad for business.

And, by the way, it is also wrong.

So, good for A&E.  Intolerance really cannot be tolerated in this day and age.

  1. When you play a role, you need to be the best you can be at that role, thus a football player will get on what he did well and not so well in that role. He will not get critiqued on things that have nothing to do with that role. So, play to strengths but keep your role in mind and work out the weaknesses.
