    Great advice here! I know people who are concerned about being 'the leader' and compete with their coworkers to get there, but don't stretch themselves and are ineffective. If they make it into a position, they often stay, not by being flexible and innovative, but by telling their bosses what they want to hear. Rather, investing time and effort in this kind of personal growth doesn't make one the leader, but makes someone a good leader regardless of what area of responsibility they have. It also makes them desirable leaders because they have the self-discipline to be successful and are able to grow into new areas of responsibility. So a person doesn't have to climb over others to try to get to the top, but rather will naturally rise due to their effectiveness.
