Over the next few weeks, we’ll review the history of empirical thought on how to motivate followers. Maslow’s hierarchy of needs is perhaps the most frequently cited psychological model of all time. Maslow presents a five-level hierarchy of human needs and the assertion that human are motivated to fulfill those needs.

I had just finished reviewing the syllabus with my Masters level leadership class, and asked my typical follow-up question. I asked them to break into small groups and come up with five ways to help someone motivate themselves (all of which had to be grounded in at least one of the theories). Then the real work began.
