11 countries have passed say-on-pay legislation since 2002; Ricardo Correa and Uger Lel show in a forthcoming paper in the Journal of Financial Economics that such legislation has led to a significant reduction in pay and an increase in pay-performance sensitivity. We’ve indeed seen a substantial increase in shareholder power.
