Fifty years ago, we did not have television news anchors, software engineers, web designers, or cosmetic surgeons. Some of the qualities that impact self-awareness are knowing who I am, where I come from, what my strengths are, how well I handle adversities, how well I seek help, and how well I am able to rein in my emotions under stress.

Over the past few decades, Silicon Valley has been such a powerful engine for entrepreneurship in technology that, all too often, it is considered to be some kind of panacea. We’re now entering a new era of innovation , one that the model doesn’t quite fit, and we will have to develop new approaches to build the future.

Certainly, times are terribly stressful, and I don't mean to downplay the reality that too many employees face. They want to chug ahead, like the Little Engine That Could. Consider George, a CEO of a large building-engineering firm in Silicon Valley. If you pay attention to workplace surveys, the news sounds pretty bad.

They spend long hours over the years to understand, study, apply and innovate ideas in this core area. In my experience, the key to remain innovative in your core area is to find an ‘alternative’ – a creative pursuit that you love, that is different from your normal work and where you spend at least a few hours in a week.
