Where Dan lost me was on point #4 – Teams Decide by Consensus. In recent months I have observed a decent amount of politically correct discourse on the topic of team building and equality. The gist of the argument seems to be that for teams to be productive, employees have to feel “empowered&# by having an equal voice.

I only care that they are totally committed to making a positive contribution to the organization. Great leaders lead all people under their care, not just those who agree with them. As much as some don’t want to hear this, there is an “I&# in team because teams are comprised of individuals.

The fuel for toxicity is conflict not resolution, ego not humility, self-interest not service above self, gossip & innuendo not truth, social & corporate climbing not team-building, and the list could go on. Those team members who share the same core values will be predisposed to trusting one another at high levels.

Organizations short on leadership talent find themselves in such a position for a reason… current leadership failed to lead. They're the ones on behalf of the team who step up and do a faceplant with an oncoming tomato. Identifying leaders? Have we really degenerated to this point?

Let me make my position very clear…design absolutely matters. While this position may seem a bit harsh, it is nonetheless true. I could go on ad nauseum with similar questions, but my guess is that you get my point… Now let’s examine the flip-side of the coin by looking at the positives associated with strong design.

As much as it may be politically incorrect to say so, it’s not nearly as much about the team, as it is the leader’s ability to assemble and lead the team. In all but the rarest of circumstances, teams simply don’t function well in the absence of sound leadership. is who they are going to put in charge?
