If you crush the individual character and spirit of those who form your team, how can your team operate at its best? Respect is earned by honoring commitments and doing the right thing regardless of opinion, sentiment, or influence. The strongest teams don’t weed out or neutralize individual tendencies, they capitalize on them.

Here are 7 elements of my strategy for the beginning days: Get to know key leaders – I am trying to get to know the staff and key Influencers in the church. I believe God uses the influence of others to build His church, so I want to know who I will be working with in the days to come. Think of it this way. Just using a cliche.

Even if you are working in a difficult culture, do what you can to make an impact in your sphere of influence. It will attract more A players willing to follow you and your influence will grow. Leadership ability starts with self and it takes superior people skill to influence and lead oneself than to lead others.

This is our opportunity to dive into the depths of our own inner lives in order for God to more greatly work in us, and in turn, those we have influence with. I know many leaders, including myself, who speak of messiness as a reality of the spiritual life, but operate in their leadership as if messy was the cardinal sin.
