In retail management I had seasons where I was interviewing multiple people every day. Do as much research as you can about the place where you are interviewing. I’ve learned this is especially difficult if you are nervous – or, like me – an introvert. Know it’s history and its culture. Be upbeat.

If you have to have one of those conversations, I have learned some principles to make them more palatable. You can be perceived as a real jerk to people. You have body odor.

Sadly, many of us learn it the hard way. It’s a hard lesson, but learning it keeps you from feeling defeated when unhealthy people do unhealthy things and blame it on your leadership. I saw it in retail. Learning when this is the case will make you a better leader. We live for the approval of others.

I refused to do any paperwork on Saturdays, for example. I have learned it well. We then noticed he had slipped on something liquid on the floor.
