Let me cut right to the chase – real leaders don’t participate in gossip, and likewise they don’t tolerate gossip from others. While the emotional distress associated with gossip can be dealt with fairly easily, the political discord that can erupt in an organization can be nothing short of disastrous.

Inclusion and participation are vital elements of leadership, particularly when leading an infusion of values. Perhaps another way to look at is in that values grow organically out of culture. Inclusive leaders recognize this, and rather than infuse their values on an organization, they seek to draw out values from the culture.

Later this week at the United Nations, several organizations are gathering to talk about serving a cause greater than self. The conference is organized by the Foundation for Social Change, a group that is lead by super connector Louise Guido. I’m encouraged to see that more companies are doing these types of service projects.

All of us are spending more time in meetings than we did five years ago, and this trend is expected to continue (Lee 2010). For example, the formal organization leader may be the discussion leader, or an HR person may be the facilitator. Any meeting participant can lead the discussion, contribute, or facilitate the discussion.
