Toxic work environments can only exist where a lack of trust and respect are present, and this can only occur in the absence of sound leadership. Let me be as clear as I can - the phrase &# toxic work environment&# is code for bad leadership, becasue a toxic culture simply cannot co-exist in the presence of great leadership.

I’ve subsequently concluded that the disparity lay not within the type of organization one leads, but within the particular environment leaders find themselves. So to use a sports analogy, I ask you to consider the mindset of 2-14 coaches Jim Caldwell of the Colts and Hue Jackson of the Raiders as they neared the end of the 2011 NFL season.

They would take the position that gossip is just part of human nature, and that gossip will always exist in any type of environment where social dynamics are present. The old saying “it is what it is” is only true until you decide to make a difference.

The Environment : What should be obvious, but what is often overlooked, is the importance of having your board members look forward to the meeting. If you conduct yourself professionally, and let your board members be white knights, the down-stream communications that follow your meeting will advance your cause as opposed to undermine it.

Place a leader into any environment and their impact will be immediately recognized. How can we re-ignite leadership potential in people who have not had great role models or the encouragement/nurturing environment to flex their leadership muscles? Identifying leaders? Have we really degenerated to this point?

A CEO leading a company on the verge of bankruptcy has to ditch the love-in and go into a crisis management mode. Harbaugh and McCarthy were having great seasons.
