They must be relevant, meaningful, in alignment with cultural values, and tied to the right set of metrics. I personally dont feel bonuses work to promote a good work ethic. My experience is that bonuses are absolutely effective given this caveat: they must be structured and implemented properly. An idividual either has it or doesnt.
