I feel that the majority of good leaders can only be developed, in a sense that no specific training, educational degree or position can define their development. Through training and education, good leaders have the opportunity to master their skills. I don’t believe that anybody is born a good leader or that one can be made.

Homeboy is now a conglomerate of several non profit industries that provide training, counseling, and work experience to rival gang members. Gang related deaths in the area of LA where Homeboy resides have declined by 75% since the bakery opened in 1992 and the LA police believe that Homeboy played a significant role in this.

Folks need to understand you are really no different than them, you are just at a different place at a different time along your career path and therefore have a different role right now. To fix this they need to be sent to sensitivity, diversity and similar trainings on a yearly basis. Good stuff. They get fixed by character.

At one point in my career, I worked for a man who was a tyrant, bigot and sexist. Large corporations have HR departments that trained to help and also many have anonymous phone lines where you can report companies’ ethical violators, workplace abuse. If that is true, when do we step up to leadership ourselves?

After college I participated in a program at Walt Disney World, where creating a pleasant work environment was part of their corporate culture and leadership training. Through having leaders that appreciated and went out of their way to encourage us, we in turn were more inclined to support one another and this made work much more enjoyable.
